Renata Smejkalova

Renata is a Czech-born, New York–based contemporary artist whose practice explores the intersection of painting, collage, and monotype printing. Her work brings together layered materials and processes to create compositions that move fluidly between surface, shape, texture, space, structure, and pattern.

Drawing from her background in fashion design and a longstanding engagement with textiles, craft, color, pattern, architecture, and art history, Renata approaches creating as an intuitive and exploratory process. Experimentation and material dialogue guide her work, allowing unexpected shifts and discoveries to shape each piece.

Close observation and everyday acts of remembering are central to her creative process, informing the interweaving of imagery drawn from a wide range of interests. Through layering, she creates dense compositions using acrylic and oil paint, gouache, watercolor, metallic leaf, pastels, markers, ink, threads and reclaimed paper.

She holds an AAS in Fashion Design from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York and an MBA from the Rochester Institute of Technology and studied oil painting through private courses in Prague. Her work is held in private collections in the United States and the Czech Republic.
"Through intuitive forms and patterns, my work examines color, space, and shape while embracing imperfection and continual transformation. Grounded in process, each piece invites curiosity and rewards closer, sustained looking."
